Early 20th Century Army Field Desk to be on Display This Year

Writer's picture: Tonya HittnerTonya Hittner

We recently rediscovered a World War l Army Chief Engineer Field Desk. The desk was built by the American Lawn Mower Company of Muncie, Indiana in 1918. American Lawn Mower Company is still in business, now in Indianapolis. The company continues to make reel lawn mowers as part of their line of lawn care products. The company built a limited number of field desks in 1917 and 1918. At that time, the company had some talented woodworkers and these men made an intricate drawer and cubby system inside each desk. Even though the cubbies and shelves are missing from our desk, it's a wonderful piece worth coming out to see. It will be on display later this year.
